Ryan Day ends Jimmy White’s fairy-tale UK Championship run

White plays Day at the York Barbican (Action Plus Sports/Alamy Live News)

Jimmy White aims to maintain his fairy-tale UK Championship run when he faces Ryan Day at the York Barbican on Saturday.

Champion in 1992, the Whirlwind made history after coming through four qualifying rounds to secure his place in the main draw of snooker’s second-most prestigious ranking event.

White beat Victor Sarkis, Mitchell Mann, Stephen Maguire and Dominic Dale to become the first player aged 60 or over to reach the last 32 of a ranking tournament since Eddie Charlton at the 1993 International Open.

It is also the first time in 12 years that the world number 89 has advanced this far at the UK Championship, where he will be desperate to extend his 41st appearance.

Standing in his way is one of the season’s in-form players in British Open champion Day, who has won seven of his last eight matches.

The Welshman, who is second behind Mark Allen on the one-year list, boasts an impressive record against the Whirlwind. Indeed, he won each of their first six meetings, including 14 of the first 15 frames, while also enjoying a 6-2 victory in the opening round of the 2016 UK Championship.

Day will be eager to build on his momentum and knows what it takes to go deep at this tournament, having reached the semi-finals five years ago.

Although, the world number 16 has won just one of the four matches he has played in the event since, and White will look to capitalise on those recent struggles as he aims to extend his magical run.

The winner of this match faces a last-16 clash with Sam Craigie, who dethroned reigning champion Zhao Xintong with a 6-2 victory earlier today.

Play gets underway at 7pm GMT on Saturday with the match contested over the best of 11 frames at the York Barbican.
