“Freezing” Mark Allen breezes past Kyren Wilson to reach UK Championship quarter-finals

Kyren Wilson and Mark Allen go head to head in a mouth-watering last-16 clash at the UK Championship on Wednesday.

The players respectively ranked seventh and ninth in the world collide at the York Barbican for a place in the quarter-finals, where a showdown with either Ryan Day or Sam Craigie awaits.

Both men are also in the top three on the one-year list having already captured silverware this term; Wilson prevailing at the European Masters before Allen successfully defended his Northern Ireland Open crown.

A semi-finalist here 12 months ago, Wilson is aiming to secure his fourth quarter-final appearance at snooker’s second-most prestigious invitational event in five years.

The Warrior hit two centuries during his 6-3 victory over Matthew Selt in the opening round, while also maintaining his composure after the former Indian Open champion applied pressure by rallying from 5-0 down.

Wilson has now met Allen in all three Triple Crown events, prevailing in both their previous Crucible encounters in 2016 and 2018 – the same year the Pistol defeated the Kettering cueist to claim his maiden major title at the Masters.

Allen has been the form player of this season so far, topping the one-year list having also been runner-up to Ryan Day at the British Open.

The Antrim ace, who lost four stone during the close season, has compiled more centuries than any other player during the campaign with 21, and will be confident of building on that momentum at the tournament where he was runner-up to Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2011 and 2018 respectively.

His latest mission to complete part two of a potential career Triple Crown began against a familiar face in practise partner Jordan Brown, against whom he recovered from a slow start before running out a 6-4 winner, though he knows he will need to be firing on all cylinders from the start today.

The winner of this match will play either Day or Craigie in the UK Championship quarter-finals.

Play gets underway at 7pm GMT on Wednesday with the match contested over the best of 11 frames at the York Barbican.
