Mark Selby begins his latest quest for a third UK Championship crown when he locks horns with Jack Lisowski on Sunday.
One of the many standout first-round ties at the York Barbican Centre pits the two-time champion against the former semi-finalist.
The Jester triumphed in this event in 2012 and 2016, while he was also runner-up to Neil Robertson in 2013, and will be among the favourites to go all the way again this year.
Selby returned the winners’ circle earlier this season with his victory at the British Open, where he beat John Higgins in a high-quality final.
The four-time World champion has prevailed in each of his last four meetings with Lisowski. That includes their showdown at the 2022 British Open, where he compiled a wonderful 147 break – memorably keeping it alive by potting the 12th red off two cushions.
World number 21 Lisowski overcame Rory Thor and reigning World Women’s champion Bai Yulu to secure his place in the main stages in York.
The six-time ranking event finalist reached the last four here in 2022, though a superb run ended in heartbreaking fashion as he surrendered a 5-3 lead to lose in a deciding frame against eventual champion Mark Allen.
Lisowski has reached another two quarter-finals in the season’s opening Triple Crown and, if his dazzling attacking style of play clicks into gear from the break-off, he will undoubtedly give Selby plenty of causes for concern at the very least.
The winner of this clash will play Ali Carter in the UK Championship second round, following the Captain’s 6-4 victory over Ryan Day.
The match gets under way at 7pm GMT on Sunday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the York Barbican Centre.
