Stephen Hendry returns to action to face Ross Muir in the qualifying round of the 2024 Welsh Open in Barnsley on Thursday.

Hendry is bidding to record only his second win since returning to the World Snooker Tour, with his sole success coming against Chris Wakelin in the 2021 British Open.

The seven-time World Champion has competed in only a handful of events since then, hand picking his playing schedule amid his TV commitments.

Hendry won just five frames from 29 played last season, culminating in a 10-4 defeat to his nephew James Cahill in the opening qualifying round of the World Championship, and has contested just four matches so far this term.

The 55-year-old has lost 18 of 25 frames contested, going down 4-2 to Mohammed Asif in the British Open, 4-0 to Fergal O’Brien in the English Open, 4-2 to Matthew Stevens in the Northern Ireland Open and 6-3 to Tian Pengfei in the International Championship.

Three times a Welsh Open champion, Hendry is vying to reach the main stages of this event for the first time since 2012, but faces a tough task against his fellow Scot.

Muir, 28, returned to the sport in 2021 following a two-year absence, equalling his best run in a ranking event at the 2021 British Open by reaching the Fourth Round.

The 2023 European Amateur Champion reached the Last 32 of this season’s International Championship, defeating Wu Yize and Hossein Vafaei before eventually losing out to Ryan Day.

He is aiming to end a three-match losing streak, with his most recent defeating coming at the hands of John Higgins in the World Open qualifiers 24 hours ago.

The first meeting between Hendry and Muir in professional competition gets under way from 1pm GMT and will be contested over the best of seven frames.
