Ronnie O’Sullivan is set to play the 150th ranking final of his illustrious career when he takes on Ryan Day at the World Open on Friday.

The Rocket, who has appeared sporadically this season, has looked sharp at Yushan Sport Centre this week, as he looks to build momentum ahead of his latest tilt at a record-breaking eighth Crucible title.

O’Sullivan opened with a commanding 5-1 win over Ross Muir then, after receiving a bye following Ishpreet Singh Chadha’s withdrawal, whitewashed Matthew Selt – making it six victories from six against his fellow Essex cueist.

The 50-year-old then defeated old rival Shaun Murphy 5-3 to set up a last-eight clash with Day, who he has beaten in eight of their 10 previous showdowns.

World number 36 Day is enjoying his best performance of the season, having failed to progress beyond the last 32 of any event prior to this week, beating Lei Peifan, Stan Moody and Artemijs Zizins along the way.

Elsewhere, world number one Judd Trump resumes his bid for a third World Open title against Hossein Vafaei, who edged out Zhang Anda on the black in the last 16 to progress to his first ranking quarter-final in a year.

Mark Allen, another two-time World Open champion, goes head to head with Wu Yize in a repeat of their clash at last month’s Players Championship, which he won 6-3.

The Pistol has dropped just three frames this week – thumping Jack Lisowski 5-1 and whitewashing Zhou Yuelong 5-0 along the way – while International Championship winner Wu has defeated former World champions Stuart Bingham and Kyren Wilson to reach the last eight.

In the other quarter-final, Gary Wilson and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh collide in a battle between the two players who must lift the trophy this weekend to snatch the last remaining place at the 12-man Tour Championship.

Three-time ranking event winner Wilson is fresh from eliminating World champion Zhao Xintong, while Un-Nooh has beaten David Grace, Michael Holt and Marco Fu for the loss of just four frames.

Play gets under way at 6am GMT (2pm local time) on Friday, with all matches contested over the best of nine frames at Yushan Sport Centre.
