Gilbert roars past Milkins into World Championship quarter-finals

Murphy and Maguire do battle once more at the Crucible (Action Plus Sports/Alamy Live News)

Shaun Murphy and Stephen Maguire go head to head at the Crucible for a place in the World Championship quarter-finals.

The pair lock horns in Sheffield for the second time in three years, with Maguire prevailing 10-8 in their 2022 first-round meeting – and what was the most recent encounter between the players.

The Scotsman has won each of the last three, though Murphy has at least reached the final of the respective tournament following six of his last seven victories in the head-to-head.

Murphy will hope that serves as a positive omen as he looks to advance beyond the last 16 of a ranking event for the first time this season (excluding the Championship League).

The 2005 champion also arrived at the Crucible aiming to avert a third successive first-round exit, and did so courtesy of a solid 10-5 victory over former Indian Open runner-up Lyu Haotian.

Victory here would send the Magician through to his 10th World Championship quarter-final, 19 years on from his first appearance which ultimately culminated in him lifting the trophy.

Meanwhile, after failing to qualify for last year’s tournament, two-time semi-finalist Maguire has enjoyed a triumphant to his Crucible return thus far.

The Maverick trailed 7-6 against Ali Carter in a repeat of their 2012 last-four showdown, which the Captain won 17-12, but took each of the final four frames to extend his 20th appearance at the venue into the second round.

The winner of this best-of-25 match will play either Robert Milkins or David Gilbert in the World Championship quarter-finals.

Play gets under way at 2.30pm BST on Friday with the opening eight frames, continues at 10am on Saturday with eight more, before playing to a conclusion with a maximum of nine at the same time the following day.
