Judd Trump is looking to reach his 10th World Championship quarter-final when he locks horns with Tom Ford at the Crucible.

The world number two and the world number 14 face off in what is, at the time of writing, the only second-round clash between two seeded players at this year’s tournament.

It will be their third meeting at this venue, with Trump prevailing 10-8 on both previous occasions in round one in 2014 and as defending champion in 2020.

They also collided in the final qualifying round 14 years ago, when a commanding 10-3 victory for Ford secured his Crucible debut.

The 2020 World Championship aside, Trump has gone on to win the respective tournament following each of his last three wins over the Leicester cueist – at this season’s Wuhan Open, as well as the World Grand Prix and International Championship in 2019.

The Ace is looking to crown a wonderful season with a second World crown – and sixth ranking title of the campaign.

His quest to do so began in a comfortable enough manner as he beat Hossein Vafaei 10-5, and has prevailed from nine of his 11 previous second-round matches at the Crucible debut.

By contrast, Ford finds himself in uncharted territory in Sheffield, where he is appearing as a seed for the first time.

This season’s International Championship runner-up claimed his maiden win here in five appearances as he saw off 2013 semi-finalist Ricky Walden 10-6 in the opening round.

And the 40-year-old will be desperate to build on that momentum by sending yet another big name packing at this year’s World Championship.

The winner of this best-of-25 match will play either Jak Jones or Si Jiahui in the quarter-finals.

Play gets under way at 7pm BST on Thursday with the opening eight frames, continues at 2.30pm on Friday with eight more, before playing to a conclusion with a maximum of nine at 10am the following day.
