Box office stars Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump collide on a date with destiny in the final of the 2022 World Snooker Championship at The Crucible Theatre.

A mouth-watering climax to an enthralling fortnight of action in Sheffield sees two of snooker’s most gifted natural talents competing for the sport’s ultimate prize.

For O’Sullivan, it is the chance to create perhaps his most significant slice of history to date by equalling Stephen Hendry’s longstanding record of seven world titles.

Making his 30th consecutive World Championship appearance, O’Sullivan is into his eighth final a staggering 21 years on from his first and is looking to continue his emphatic strike rate.

With seven UK Championship titles and seven Masters titles already under his belt, victory here would create the perfect symmetry for the sport’s biggest household name and would surely cement his position as the greatest player ever to pick up a cue.

At 46, O’Sullivan is vying to become the oldest player to win the World Championship since Ray Reardon (45) back in 1978 and has already broken Hendry’s Crucible match wins record (70) during this event.

The Rocket began his charge to the final by defeating David Gilbert 10-5 from 3-0 down, before blitzing past Mark Allen 13-4 and Stephen Maguire 13-5.

He then overcame ‘Class of 92’ rival John Higgins 17-11 in the Semi-Finals, taking his tally of centuries for the tournament to 12 in the process.

Trump, meanwhile, is aiming to join the elite group of 13 multiple World Champions, having claimed his maiden Crucible crown three years ago.

The 32-year-old finds himself in a third World Championship final, 11 years on from his first, and is targeting a 24th career ranking title and what would surely be the most memorable to date.

Winner of the Champion of Champions and Turkish Masters this season, Trump began his run by overcoming Iranian debutant Hossein Vafaei 10-4 and 2020 semi-finalist Anthony McGill 11-9 despite being below his best for the most part.

He then produced an inspired comeback from 8-5 down with eight consecutive frames to defeat 2015 World Champion Stuart Bingham in the Quarter-Finals, before fending off a remarkable fightback from 7-1 and 12-5 down from Mark Williams to edge over the line 17-16 in a thrilling Semi-Final on Saturday.

The left-hander’s prolific strike rate in ranking finals has seen him win 17 of his last 21, three of which coming against O’Sullivan.

Trump has played 14 frames more than O’Sullivan en route to this year’s world final, but has made four fewer century breaks.

The duo are inseparable when it comes to the head-to-heads, having claimed 13 wins apiece from their 26 previous meetings since 2008.

This, however, marks only their second meeting at The Crucible, with O’Sullivan having prevailed 17-11 in the Semi-Finals eight years ago

The match gets under way from 1pm BST on Sunday for a maximum of eight frames, resuming from 7pm that evening and 1pm on Monday before being played to a finish over the best of 35 from 7pm that evening.
