Judd Trump begins his latest quest for a second World Championship title with a tough test against Anthony McGill at The Crucible.

Having lost in an epic final in 2011, Trump finally fulfilled his destiny in 2019 by claiming a first world crown and is now looking to join an elite group of multiple World Champions.

The 33-year-old fell agonisingly short of achieving the feat 12 months ago, losing out to Ronnie O’Sullivan in a gripping final which saw The Rocket equal Stephen Hendry’s record of seven world titles.

While Trump has not picked up a ranking title so far this season, he did secure a second Masters crown at Ally Pally in January and also finished runner-up in this year’s World Grand Prix.

He returns to Sheffield as the number five seed and has reached at least the Quarter-Final stage in each of his last five Crucible campaigns.

McGill, meanwhile, is out to avenge his 13-11 defeat to Trump in the Second Round of last year’s World Championship, having made three centuries in a high quality contest.

The tenacious Scot is renowned for producing his best form in the sport’s show-piece event, having notably reached the Semi-Finals as a qualifier in 2020.

McGill is making his ninth consecutive World Championship appearance, with wins over John Astley and Cao Yupeng in the qualifying stages securing his spot in the main event.

He reached the Semi-Finals of this season’s Northern Ireland Open, as well as the Quarter-Finals of the World Grand Prix, but has ominously won just one of his eight previous meetings with Trump dating back to 2010.

The match gets under way from 2.30pm BST on Tuesday April 18 for a maximum of nine frames, before resuming to a finish on Wednesday from 2.30pm over the best of 19.

Either number 12 seed Jack Lisowski or Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham will await the winner in the Second Round.
