Wilson and Ding go head to head in Sheffield (SIPA Asia/ZUMA Wire/Alamy Live News)

Kyren Wilson and Ding Junhui go head to head in a mouth-watering World Championship first-round clash at the Crucible on Wednesday.

Arguably the pick of the ties in the opening round, the two former finalists do battle for one of the five last-16 spots still up for grabs.

Wilson, who was runner-up to Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2020, has been the form player in Sheffield in recent years.

The Warrior has reached the semi-finals in three of the last four editions of snooker’s blue-riband event – and six successive quarter-finals.

Wilson overcame Ding on the way to reaching the Gibraltar Open final last month, although the Dragon was victorious when they clashed at the Turkish Masters a couple of weeks previously.

The three-time UK champion is set to appear at the Crucible for a 16th successive year.

Although, it is only the third time he arrives as a qualifier, having defeated Tian Pengfei 6-4 and reeled off six straight frames from 7-4 down to deny World Seniors champion David Lilley.

Of course, Ding reached the final on the most recent occasion that he was forced to qualify in 2016 – losing 18-14 to Mark Selby.

The world number 29 slipped out of the top 16 earlier this season – mainly due to the loss of points from his 2019 UK Championship triumph.

But he has built good momentum in recent weeks after reaching the semi-finals in Turkey, as well as the Gibraltar Open quarter-finals.

The winner will play 2015 champion Stuart Bingham in the second round at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Play gets underway at 10am BST on Monday with the opening nine frames, while a maximum of 10 commence from 7pm.
