Mark Allen goes head to head with Ali Carter in a tasty quarter-final showdown at the Wuhan Open on Friday.
It promises to be an intriguing last-eight clash between the two players boasting a combined 110 appearances at this stage of ranking events.
The Pistol has an added incentive heading into business end of the tournament, with the prospect of becoming world number one for the first time becoming a real possibility.
World number three Allen must go on and lift the trophy is he is to displace O’Sullivan, who he could face in the semi-finals should they both come through their respective matches.
The reigning UK champion has had to dig deep to make it this far, coming through deciding frames against Mark Joyce and Si Jiahui earlier in the week.
He then had runs of 76, 61 and 54 on the way to a 5-2 victory over fellow left-hander Jack Lisowski in the fourth round.
His 10 previous meetings with Carter have been shared, although Allen has prevailed in each of their three encounters on Chinese soil.
As well as three commanding victories, the Captain has also had to dig deep and demonstrate his trademark determination and tenacity to advance to the last eight.
Beating Bai Yulu 5-2 and recording a pair of 5-1 wins over Jamie Clarke and Liam Highfield – compiling the highest break of the tournament against the former courtesy of a sublime 145 total clearance – Carter also produced a wonderful turnaround from 4-1 down to stun former World champion Stuart Bingham in a deciding frame.
The winner of this match will play either Ronnie O’Sullivan or Lyu Haotian in the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open.
Play gets under way at 12.30pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Wuhan Gymnasium.
