Ronnie O’Sullivan faces another Chinese opponent at the Wuhan Open when he plays Yuan SiJun in the last 16 on Thursday.

The Rocket is aiming to reach his 138th ranking quarter-final when he locks horns with a home favourite for the second round running.

O’Sullivan dropped just two frames in his opening two matches as he enjoyed commanding 5-1 victories over Ken Doherty and Mark Davis.

However, he was in danger of elimination in the third round against Pang Junxu, who had recovered from 2-0 down to lead 4-3 in a repeat of their first-round clash at the Crucible six months earlier.

But like in that showdown, which he won 10-7, the seven-time World champion was not to be denied by last season’s WST Classic finalist with breaks of 117 and 64 getting him over the line.

O’Sullivan won all three meetings with Yuan back in 2019, though the Chinese prevailed 3-0 in their most recent clash during last season’s Championship League.

The world number 48 is aiming to reach his sixth ranking quarter-final, and will certainly not be intimidated by his opponent.

Yuan defeated Tom Ford and reigning Welsh Open champion Robert Milkins on the way to reaching the English Open fourth round, where he was beaten by eventual winner Judd Trump.

And he has produced four centuries already this week. Three of those – 120, 102 and 100 – came during his hugely impressive 5-0 whitewash of Ding Junhui.

Another – a top run of 107 – helped the 23-year-old to a 5-2 win over Ashley Carty, in which he also had runs of 92, 87, 68 and 55.

The winner of this match will play either Zhang Anda or Lyu Haotian in the Wuhan Open quarter-finals.

Play gets under way at 12.30pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Wuhan Gymnasium.
