Wuhan Open Snooker 2024 | Quarter-Finals Preview and Order of Play

Home favourite Ding plays Wakelin on Wednesday (Wu Zhizun/Xinhua/Alamy Live News)

Ding Junhui looks to continue delighting his home crowd when he plays Chris Wakelin in the last 16 of the Wuhan Open on Wednesday.

The Dragon is one of six Chinese players still standing at the China Optics Valley Convention & Exhibition Center (COVCEC), along with the likes of Judd Trump, Shaun Murphy and John Higgins.

Ding has been in fine form this week, hitting four centuries and six more breaks over 60 in his three matches so far, with a pair of 5-2 victories over Robbie McGuigan and Yuan Sijun sandwiched a 5-0 whitewash of Xu Si.

It has been a welcome upturn in fortunes for the 14-time ranking event winner, who arrived having won just one of his five games this season.

Although, he faces a tricky test in Wakelin, who has dropped just a single frame in his victories over Haris Tahir and David Lilley.

The former Shoot Out champion is certainly in the better form of the two players, having reached the semi-finals at the English Open last month.

Meanwhile, reigning champion Trump resumes his title defence against John Higgins in what is undoubtedly the standout tie of the round.

The Ace certainly holds the upper hand in recent times, with 10 wins from their last 11 meetings (excluding the Championship League).

Another tasty clash between two top-16 players pits Shaun Murphy against Ali Carter, who was the runner-up here 12 months ago.

Zhang Anda is also flying the local flag. He takes on a player making the most of an unexpected opportunity in Mark Joyce, who is only appearing as a replacement following Ronnie O’Sullivan’s withdrawal.

Si Jiahui is another player looking to delight his home crowd when he faces Duane Jones, while Xiao Guodong’s reward for eliminating World champion Kyren Wilson is a clash with Barry Hawkins.

Jack Lisowski has hit four centuries this week, and ‘Jackpot’ will hope to bring his scoring boots once more when he plays English Open runner-up Wu Yize. The other clash sees Ben Woollaston lock horns with Long Zehuang, who built on his qualifying-round scalp of Mark Selby with a 5-0 whitewash of Jackson Page on Tuesday.

Play gets under way at 7am BST (2pm local time) on Wednesday with all matches contested over the best of nine frames at the COVCEC.
