Wuhan Open Snooker 2024 | Quarter-Finals Preview and Order of Play
Judd Trump continues his Wuhan Open title defence when he goes head to head with Chris Wakelin on Thursday for a place in the semi-finals.
Shaun Murphy and Jack Lisowski are also in action, while Zhang Anda, Si Jiahui and Xiao Guodong will be flying the home flag once more at the China Optics Valley Convention & Exhibition Center (COVCEC).
Nevertheless, reigning champion and world number one Trump will be the biggest draw on day five.
Following his 11th victory in 12 meetings with John Higgins in the last 16, he has now won 27 of his 30 matches this season, and all 11 of his contests at this event.
Not only that, but he has continued his record of having reached the quarter-finals in all 14 tournaments he has played in 2024.
What will also stand him in good stead here is the fact he has won all 13 of his previous encounters with Wakelin, including a resounding 9-2 success in last season’s Northern Ireland Open final.
Although, Wakelin will certainly enter his latest mission to end the drought full of positive momentum.
Indeed, he produced three successive total clearances of 128, 139 and 132, along with further breaks of 92 and 78 during his 5-3 victory over home favourite Ding Junhui on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, Shaun Murphy and Xiao Guodong collide in a quarter-final for the second time in as many months.
Murphy was a 6-2 victor when they met at the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, though Xiao will be looking to avenge that defeat fresh from already beaten Barry Hawkins and reigning World champion Kyren Wilson this week.
Meanwhile, there will be split loyalties among the home fans as two of their own go head to head in Zhang Anda and Si Jiahui.
Zhang battled from 4-2 down to edge out Mark Joyce on the final black in the last 16, while Si hit breaks of 114, 107 and 100 in his 5-2 win over Duane Jones.
It means there will be at least one Chinese player in the semi-finals and the head-to-head record favours the Mighty Mouse, who has won all three previous encounters.
World number 70 Long Zehuang – the lowest-ranked player still standing having defeated the likes of Jackson Page and Ben Woollaston after beating Mark Selby in qualifying – will be hoping to follow suit in what is the first ranking quarter-final of his short career.
However, he faces a tough test in the free-scoring Jack Lisowski, who has already hit five centuries this week while dropping just two frames in his three matches.
Play gets under way at 7am BST (2pm local time) on Thursday with all matches contested over the best of nine frames at the COVCEC.
