Wilson headlines day three in Leicester (Every Second Media/Alamy Live News)

Kyren Wilson is among the star names in action as the Wuhan Open qualifiers conclude in Leicester on Tuesday.

Just under seven weeks after Zhao Xintong was crowned China’s first World champion, a new campaign full of more drama will commence at the Mattioli Arena, where some of the game’s top players look to make a winning start.

Zhao took over the Crucible crown from Wilson, whose title defence fell at the first hurdle in Sheffield, where he was beaten 10-9 by Scottish Open champion Lei Peifan in the opening round.

However, that result was a blip in what was an otherwise successful 2024-25 campaign for the Warrior, who claimed four ranking titles – including the German Masters and Players Championship.

His first opponent of the new season will be a man playing his maiden match as a professional in Connor Benzey, with the former European Under-17 champion finally getting over the line at Q School at the sixth attempt last month.

Barry Hawkins and Chris Wakelin are the other two top-16 players in action on day three in Leicester. Four-time ranking event winner Hawkins locks horns with Julien Leclercq as Chris Wakelin, who beat the latter in the 2022-23 Shoot Out final, plays three-time ranking victor Marco Fu.

Elsewhere, Jimmy White launches his 46th successive season as a professional against Anthony McGill, while fellow crowd favourite Ken Doherty goes up against Ben Woollaston.

Former World champion Stuart Bingham takes on Liam Highfield – back on the tour after a year away – with 2024 Crucible finalist Jak Jones playing Oliver Brown.

Multiple ranking event winners Ryan Day and Robert Milkins go head to head with Jonas Luz and Wang Yuchen respectively, as Scottish Open champion Lei Peifan locks horns with former Women’s World champion Ng On Yee.

The day’s other matches see Jimmy Robertson play Liam Pullen, Jackson Page play Ross Muir, and Xu Si take on Chris Totten.

Play gets under way at 10am BST on Tuesday with all matches contested over the best of nine frames at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester.
