Ken Doherty and Reanne Evans go head to head in the opening qualifying round for the 2023 World Championship on Wednesday.

One of the more eye-catching ties of the round pits the 1997 Crucible king against the 12-time World Women’s champion at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

The players also locked horns in the first qualifying round eight years ago, with Doherty prevailing a narrow 10-8 winner.

The Dubliner will commence his 33rd successive World Championship campaign as he targets a 20th appearance at the Crucible, where he lifted the trophy 26 years ago while also reaching the 1998 and 2003 finals.

Although, Doherty has not appeared in the main stages since 2014, and he must upset the form book in order to end his wait.

Indeed, the 53-year-old has won just five of the 20 matches he has played this season, while he was notably beaten by three-time World Women’s champion Ng On Yee in the British Open qualifiers.

That result will certainly encourage Evans as she looks to do the unthinkable by winning four qualifying matches to reach the Crucible.

The 12-time World Women’s champion does have previous in this tournament, having recorded an impressive 10-8 victory over former Shootout winner Robin Hull in 2017.

She may have won only two matches all season, but one of those came against former Crucible king Stuart Bingham at the Shootout. And though played over just a single frame, it is a result that will give her confidence to add another ex-World champion to her list of scalps.

The winner of this best-of-19 encounter will play Hammad Miah in the second qualifying round for this year’s World Championship.

Play gets underway at 10am BST on Wednesday with the opening nine frames, before resuming with a maximum of 10 from 7pm at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
