Jimmy White begins his latest quest for a Crucible return with a tie against Andrew Pagett in the opening round of the World Championship Qualifiers on Monday.

White, who was famously beaten in six World Championship finals during the 80s and 90s, last graced The Crucible carpet back in 2006.

At 59, White is now the oldest player on the professional circuit, having repeatedly been granted a wildcard to compete on the main tour, and his dream of a return to the sport’s showpiece event lives on.

However, wins have been few and far between for ‘The Whirlwind’ this season, and he must reel off four consecutive victories against high class opposition if he is to mark a fairy-tale return to The Crucible in a fortnight’s time.

White was beaten by his long-term nemesis Stephen Hendry in the opening round of last year’s qualifiers and has since made it past the First Round of only one ranking tournament this season – the British Open last August.

His first test comes against world number 109 Pagett – who regained his place on the professional circuit courtesy of winning the 2020 EBSA European Championship.

The Welshman’s best run of the season also came at the British Open – where he reached the Third Round, but he has generally failed to produce his best form on his return so far.

Pagett’s only previous appearance at the World Championship came back in 2011, when he was defeated 10-7 by Jamie Cope in the First Round.

Pagett and White have met twice in previous competition, but not since 2013, when Pagett whitewashed the people’s champion 4-0 in a European Tour event in Bulgaria.

Their latest encounter gets under way from 7.30pm BST and will be contested over the best of 11 frames, with former Shoot Out champion Thepchaiya Un-Nooh awaiting the winner in the next round.
