Mark Allen and Mark Selby lock horns in the Masters quarter-finals at Alexandra Palace for a second successive year.

The pair contested a memorable last-eight clash 12 months ago, with Allen producing a magical 147 break as he recovered from 4-1 down to prevail 6-5.

In fact, all three of their previous Masters encounters have been in the quarter-finals, and all gone to a deciding frame, with Selby coming through on the other two occasions in 2009 and 2010.

The two meetings between the players this season have been shared and, in both cases, the winner of their match has gone on to win the respective tournament – Selby at the British Open and Allen at the Riyadh Season Championship.

Both will hope that serves as a positive omen on Thursday in their quest to add to their Masters silverware collection.

Fresh from his triumph in Riyadh, Allen was in fine form against debutant Si Jiahui in the opening round.

The Pistol hit breaks of 111, 94, 80 and 70 on the way to a 6-2 victory, and the 2018 champion now sets his sights on a fifth Masters semi-final appearance.

That would bring him level with three-time winner Selby, who is aiming to reach the last four at snooker’s most prestigious invitational event for the first time since his run to the 2014 showpiece.

Indeed, after reaching the final in five of his first seven appearances, the Jester has failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals since. Nevertheless, he looked in fine fettle against Ali Carter in round one, with breaks of 126, 108 and 93 helping him seal a dominant 6-1 rout.

Another former Masters champion awaits the winner in the semi-finals in 2015 victor Shaun Murphy, who overcame Neil Robertson 6-2 earlier today.

The match breaks off at 7pm GMT on Thursday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Alexandra Palace.
