Shaun Murphy and Neil Robertson renew their Masters rivalry in a mouth-watering opening quarter-final on Thursday.
The last eight commences with a battle of two former champions, and two of the best breakbuilders in the game.
The Alexandra Palace provides the grandest available setting for the 40th meeting between the players across all competitions, and their fifth at snooker’s most prestigious invitational event.
Two of the previous four came in finals; Robertson triumphing 10-6 in 2012, and Murphy exacting his revenge with a 10-2 rout three years later.
The Magician, who was also a 6-4 winner when the players met in the opening round here two years ago, is aiming to reach his seventh Masters semi-final, and second in as many years.
Murphy began his 20th successive appearance at the event by prevailing 6-3 against Gary Wilson in the opening round, hitting a top break of 103 along the way.
As for Robertson – a late replacement following Ronnie O’Sullivan’s withdrawal – he looked set for a fifth first-round exit in six appearances at 5-1 down against John Higgins in the opening match of the tournament.
However, the Thunder dug deep with breaks of 63, 118, 80 and 57 helping him complete an almighty turnaround to stun the Wizard in a deciding frame.
Robertson, who also lifted the Paul Hunter trophy in 2022, now looks to match Murphy on six semi-final appearances at the Masters.
There is plenty of incentive for both players, with either three-time winner Mark Selby or 2018 champion Mark Allen awaiting whoever prevails in the last four.
The match breaks off at 1pm GMT on Thursday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Alexandra Palace.
