History-making Higgins sets up Masters final clash with Wilson

Kyren Wilson looks to book his place in a second successive Masters final when he plays debutant Wu Yize in the last four on Saturday.

John Higgins awaits the winner of the second semi-final in Sunday’s showpiece, following his dramatic 6-5 victory over Judd Trump earlier in the day at Alexandra Palace.

Wilson is looking to make it third time lucky in his quest to get his hands on the Paul Hunter trophy, having been a beaten finalist in 2018 and 12 months ago.

The Warrior, who opened with a 6-2 victory over Si Jiahui, prevailed from an epic quarter-final with Neil Robertson on Friday.

He hit two centuries on the way to a commanding 4-1 lead, only to lose the next four frames and trail 5-4. However, the world number two produced another gutsy ton to force a decider, in which he just about managed to scrape over the line.

Wilson now looks to maintain his 100 per cent record in Masters semi-finals against a player who is really enjoying his first time at Alexandra Palace.

Since snooker’s most prestigious invitational event moved here in 2012, Wu is only the second man to reach the last four on debut, after David Gilbert six years ago.

The Chinese has achieved that feat in style. First, he dethroned reigning champion Shaun Murphy 6-2 in the opening match of the tournament, before taking just 87 minutes to complete a 6-0 rout of compatriot Xiao Guodong on Friday.

The 22-year-old now stands within two victories of becoming China’s second Masters champion, 15 years after Ding Junhui.

It promises to be another mouth-watering semi-final between two players desperate to join the illustrious Masters roll of honour, with Higgins awaiting the winner in the final.

The match breaks off at 7pm GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Alexandra Palace.
