Former champions Kyren Wilson and Ronnie O’Sullivan collide in a box office quarter-final at the Shanghai Masters on Thursday.

The duo have both tasted success in this prestigious competition down the years and will do battle in a bid to maintain their hopes of restoring former glories this weekend.

O’Sullivan is the most decorated player in Shanghai Masters history, having initially triumphed in 2009 before embarking in a three-year unbeaten run from 2017-2019 and winning the title again when the event returned following the pandemic in 2023.

The Rocket’s rampant run was brought to an end by world number one Judd Trump in the semi-finals last year, but he returns in search of a first title of the calendar year.

O’Sullivan failed to pick up any silverware last season, with ranking event appearances proving few and far between, but he did enjoy a resurgent run to the semi-finals of the World Championship.

The recently-married 49-year-old got his season off and running with a 6-5 win over Barry Hawkins in a high quality encounter which saw him compile breaks of 94, 94, 90, 89 and 67.

Wilson, meanwhile, is back at the scene of his landmark triumph a decade ago – when he defeated Trump 10-9 to clinch the first of his 10 ranking titles to date.

German Masters and Players Championship winner last season, Wilson saw his World Championship title defence brought to a swift end by Lei Peifan on the opening day at The Crucible back in April.

The world number two started his 2025/26 campaign with a dramatic 6-5 win over Si Jiahui, firing in breaks of 120, 82, 114, 114, 83 and 97 in a thrilling contest.

Wilson has won his last two meetings with O’Sullivan, most recently at the Xi’an Grand Prix in 2024, though ‘The Rocket’ has the overall upper-hand with six wins from their ten previous encounters.

The match gets under way from 12.30pm BST and will be contested over the best of 11 frames.

Either two-time Shanghai Masters champion Ding Junhui or reigning World Champion Zhao Xintong will await the winner in the semi-finals on Saturday.
