Kyren Wilson locks horns with Ronnie O’Sullivan in a mouth-watering second-round showdown at the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday.
The undisputed tie of the round brings a battle of two of the most successful players in the tournament’s history.
They are two of the three players to win the Shanghai Masters on multiple occasions: O’Sullivan triumphing a record five times, while reigning champion Wilson doubled up 12 months ago.
The Warrior’s 11-9 victory over Ali Carter came a decade after he announced himself to the world with his breakthrough triumph in Shanghai.
Wilson also won the Masters last season, but it was a generally disappointing campaign for the 2024 World champion.
The 34-year-old had started 2025-26 in second place in the WST rankings but, mainly affected by problems with his cue, slipped to seventh come its conclusion.
His 2026-27 season began at the Championship League, though he was forced to withdraw during the early stages of the competition following a burglary at his house.
On a brighter note, Wilson has won six of his last seven meetings with O’Sullivan, including a 5-3 victory in the quarter-finals of last year’s Shanghai Masters.
Although, the Rocket did manage to halt a run of six straight defeats when they collided in the following month’s Saudi Arabia Masters, recovering from 5-3 down to prevail in a decider.
That tournament in Jeddah provided one of O’Sullivan’s highlights of a season in which he appeared sporadically on the World Snooker Tour. Indeed, he hit two 147 breaks during his 6-4 win over Chris Wakelin in the semi-finals.
The seven-time World champion also compiled the highest break in snooker history at the World Open, courtesy of his memorable 153 clearance against Ryan Day.
O’Sullivan rounded off the campaign by triumphing at the World Seniors Championship, but it is on the main tour where he will hope to make more of an impact this term. He started in a solid enough manner on Monday, hitting breaks of 75, 73, 71 and 55 on the way to a commanding 6-1 win over 18-year-old wildcard Liu Linhao.
A quarter-final showdown with Mark Williams, who recovered from 4-2 down to beat Chris Wakelin 6-5 earlier on Tuesday, is the prize on offer to the winner.
The match breaks off at 12.30pm BST (7.30pm local time) and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Luwan Indoor Stadium.
