British Open Snooker 2024 | Quarter-Finals Preview and Order of Play
Mark Selby continues his quest to go the extra step at the British Open when he faces David Gilbert in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Judd Trump, Mark Allen and John Higgins are also in action on what promises to be an enthralling day at The Centaur in Cheltenham.
Selby is appearing in his third straight British Open quarter-final – and 97th in any ranking event – having enjoyed three deciding-frame victories this week against Pang Junxu, Yuan Sijun and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
The Jester was runner-up to Mark Williams in this event 12 months ago – beating Gilbert 4-3 along the way – while he produced a memorable maximum break against Jack Lisowski the previous year.
History suggests he is in for a closely fought clash with Gilbert, as each of their three previous meetings have gone to a deciding frame.
That included a 5-4 victory at last month’s Xi’an Grand Prix for the Angry Farmer, who has edged out Ashley Carty and Lyu Haotian in deciders this week to reach his 26th ranking quarter-final.
Meanwhile, world number one Trump and world number three Allen collide in the pick of the last-eight ties.
This season’s Shanghai Masters and Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters champion, Trump is eyeing his 23rd victory from 25 matches in the campaign, having recorded a trio a 4-2 wins over Ryan Day, Mark Davis and Stephen Maguire to reach his first British Open quarter-final.
Although, he has lost three of his four previous meetings with Allen, who made a 147 against Ben Mertens on Thursday before battling past Chris Wakelin in a late-night thriller that finished at 1.30am BST.
Elsewhere, Higgins resumes his quest for an immediate top-16 return against former semi-finalist Elliot Slessor, who beat World champion Kyren Wilson in the last 16.
The Wizard is a four-time British Open winner – lifting the trophy in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2004 – while he has prevailed in each of his six previous meetings with Slessor.
The other tie sees Jak Jones appearing in his first quarter-final since his run to the Crucible showpiece in May.
The Welshman, who defeated Luca Brecel in the previous round, goes up against Oliver Lines, with the left-hander targeting his first appearance in a ranking semi-final.
Play gets under way at 1pm BST on Friday with all matches contested over the best of nine frames at The Centaur in Cheltenham.
