Kyren Wilson is set for a tasty showdown with Chang Bingyu on Wednesday, as the second round takes centre stage at the English Open.
We are down to the last 32 players in the season’s opening Home Nations event at Brentwood Centre, including six World champions and a couple of giant-killers.
Wilson is one of the former Crucible kings still standing, with the Warrior aiming to go one better than his run to the Shanghai Masters final last month.
He is also targeting the extra step at the English Open, having been runner-up in 2017, and opened with a solid 4-1 win over Mateusz Baranowski in round one.
However, Wilson will be wary of facing Chang, two weeks after he defeated Judd Trump, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Zhao Xintong on route to capturing his breakthrough ranking title at the Wuhan Open.
Not only that, but the Chinese was a dominant 4-1 winner in his only previous meeting with the 2024 World champion at last year’s Scottish Open.
Meanwhile, two-time English Open winners Judd Trump and Mark Selby resume their quests to complete a hat-trick.
Trump, who whitewashed Jordan Brown 4-0 in his opener, will look to build on that momentum against Ashley Carty. Selby, though, was forced to fight back from 3-2 down before scraping past Ricky Walden 4-3. He will hope for a smoother day at the office against Zhang Anda.
Mark Williams and Ding Junhui were also taken to deciding frames in the opening round. They play Matthew Selt and Ashley Hugill respectively, while Shaun Murphy locks horns with Jamie Clarke.
Wu Yize looked impressive during his 4-1 win over Gao Yang. Next up for the World champion is another compatriot of his in Xu Si, as Barry Hawkins plays fellow left-hander Daniel Wells.
New professional Luo Zetao stunned two-time winner Neil Robertson in a deciding frame in round one. His reward is a clash with Gong Chenzhi, while Zhao’s conqueror Oliver Lines takes on Yuan Sijun.
Elsewhere, Scottish Open champion Chris Wakelin faces last year’s English Open finalist Zhou Yuelong, while Ali Carter plays Robbie Williams, and Anthony McGill goes up against Fan Zhengyi.
Play gets under way at 10am BST on Wednesday with all matches contested over the best of seven frames at Brentwood Centre.
