Kyren Wilson and Gary Wilson go head to head for a place in the Players Championship semi-finals in Wolverhampton on Friday.

A battle of the Wilsons takes centre stage at the Aldersley Leisure Village, with a last-four showdown with the free-scoring Shaun Murphy at stake.

Kyren Wilson has won three of his four professional meetings with his namesake outside the Championship League, including a 10-8 success in the 2021 World Championship last 32.

Although, Gary Wilson stopped the rot and prevailed in their most recent encounter, winning 5-3 in the quarter-finals on the way to lifting his maiden ranking title at the Scottish Open in December.

For Kyren Wilson, this represents his fourth ranking quarter-final in a season that has already seen him capture the European Masters title, as well as reaching this stage of the German Masters earlier this month.

Yet the Warrior’s Players Championship record leaves a lot to be desired. Although a 2021 semi-finalist, his 6-2 victory over Zhou Yuelong on Tuesday – in which he hit two centuries – prevented a fifth first-round exit in six appearances.

Meanwhile, namesake Gary claimed his maiden victory in the elite event with a 6-3 triumph over UK Championship runner-up Ding Junhui on Wednesday.

His Scottish Open success aside, it has been a generally poor season for the Tyneside Terror, whose appearance here represented his only other in the last 16 of any ranking tournament this term.

Nevertheless, he will hope the fact he went on to lift the trophy in Edinburgh – and what was his sole venture beyond the last 32 at a ranking event – serves as a good omen this week.

The winner of this match will take on Murphy in the Players Championship semi-finals.
