Shaun Murphy looks to continue his impressive form when he faces Ryan Day in the Players Championship Quarter-Finals on Thursday.

Returning to the elite 16-man event for the first time since 2020, the Magician arrived in Wolverhampton fresh from reaching the Welsh Open final in Llandudno the previous weekend.

There, he suffered a narrow 9-7 defeat to Robert Milkins, but responded at the Aldersley Leisure Village with an impressive 6-3 victory over world number two Mark Selby.

The world number 11 knows what it takes to go deep in this tournament. He reached the semi-finals on his previous appearance in 2020, while he was runner-up to Ronnie O’Sullivan two years earlier.

Murphy has won each of his previous three meetings with Day over the best of 11 frames or longer, including a 6-3 triumph in the 2017 UK Championship Semi-Finals and 9-4 success in the 2007 Malta Cup final.

Day will be desperate to stop the rot by securing his maiden venture into the semi-finals of this tournament.

The Welshman, who has suffered first-round exits in two of his three previous appearances, is the second seed in Wolverhampton following his British Open success in October.

Although, this marks the only other occasion that he has reached the Quarter-Finals in any ranking tournament this season.

Dynamite arrived having fallen at the opening hurdle in three of the last four events he had entered, but returned to winning ways on Monday with a commanding 6-2 victory over Shoot Out champion Chris Wakelin.

The winner will take on either Kyren Wilson or Gary Wilson in the Semi-Finals.

The match gets underway at 7pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton.
