Ronnie O’Sullivan looks to reach his first ranking final in 16 months when he takes on Chris Wakelin at the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters.

The Rocket has not lifted silverware since his triumph at the inaugural World Masters of Snooker in March 2024, but is now just two victories away from ending that drought with more success in Saudi Arabia.

O’Sullivan has twice recovered from the brink of elimination to keep his title hopes on track at the Green Halls in Jeddah.

Indeed, he overturned a 5-2 deficit to edge out Chang Bingyu in round six. The seven-time World champion then recovered from 5-3 down with back-to-back centuries on the way to scraping past Kyren Wilson in the quarter-finals, consequently condemning the Warrior to his first defeat of the season.

While this will be the 95th ranking semi-final appearance of O’Sullivan’s glittering career, Wakelin is gearing up for what will only be his fifth.

The world number 16 is guaranteed his biggest payday of £100,000, having also come through successive deciding frames against Zhao Xintong and Barry Hawkins.

Wakelin recovered from 5-3 down to edge out World champion Zhao, before surviving Hawkins’ fightback from 4-1 down to deny the four-time ranking event winner.

The Nuneaton cueist does hold a share of the head-to-head record with O’Sullivan, which stands at two wins apiece, although their most recent encounter outside the Championship League came almost nine years ago at the English Open.

It promises to be another intriguing semi-final on Friday, with Neil Robertson awaiting the winner in Saturday’s showpiece.

The match breaks off at 6pm BST and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Green Halls in Jeddah.
