Judd Trump locks horns with Mark Selby in a blockbuster quarter-final showdown at the Shenzhen Open on Friday.
Two of snooker’s modern greats collide over the best of nine frames at Bao’an Sports Centre, with both appearing at this stage of a ranking event for the 113th time.
Selby has prevailed in each of the last three meetings, a streak which began in the quarter-finals of last season’s Shanghai Masters. The Jester subsequently followed it up by prevailing when they contested the final of the Champion of Champions and UK Championship later in the year.
Nevertheless, Trump is undoubtedly the fresh of the two players ahead of the mouth-watering clash, with the Ace having played a game less this week.
After opening with a 5-0 whitewash of Huang Jiahao, the former world number one received a walkover into the last 16 following Anthony McGill’s withdrawal due to illness. He then put Si Jiahui to the sword for the 11th time in their 12 meetings.
Trump, who won the Shanghai Masters in August, continues his record of having reached the quarter-finals at every tournament he has played this season.
The Ace will now be keen to go the extra step in this event, having been runner-up at the inaugural edition (then titled the Xi’an Grand Prix) two years ago.
Meanwhile, Selby is appearing at this stage of the tournament – across both entitlements – for the first time.
The four-time World champion has continued his promising start to the season, in which he has already won the China Open and been runner-up at the British Open.
Selby has come through two gruelling contests this week against Andrew Higginson and Stephen Maguire – both of whom were beaten 5-3. Although, those wins sandwiched a free-scoring 5-1 rout of Jackson Page, against whom he made three centuries.
Another World champion awaits the winner of this clash in the semi-finals, whether it be 2005 victor Shaun Murphy or reigning Crucible king Wu Yize.
The match breaks off at 7am BST (2pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Bao’an Sports Centre.
