Wu Yize will be aiming to avoid joining Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Williams and Zhao Xintong as early Shenzhen Open casualties on Tuesday.
The first day of the rebranded event, formerly known as the Xi’an Grand Prix, saw reigning champion Williams fall at the first hurdle, while world number one Zhao and seven-time Crucible king O’Sullivan were also sent packing.
Wu hopes he will not suffer the same fate, with the World champion looking to truly kickstart his season, during which two runs to the last 16 represent his best performances at ranking events.
The world number four was also a semi-finalist at the Shanghai Masters, though he will be keen to get his hands on more silverware in the near future.
His latest quest to achieve that begins against Jamie Clarke, while China Open winner Mark Selby takes on Andrew Higginson.
Kyren Wilson, the winner of the inaugural Xi’an Grand Prix two years ago, locks horns with Sam Craigie, as four-time World champion John Higgins plays David Grace.
Shaun Murphy, runner-up to Williams in Xi’an 12 months ago, starts his mission to go one better against Marco Fu in a repeat of the 2008 UK Championship final, which the Magician edged 10-9.
Home favourites Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong face Ricky Walden and Michael Holt respectively, while Barry Hawkins takes on British Open semi-finalist Liam Highfield.
Later, Neil Robertson is in third-round action against Lei Peifan, as namesake Jimmy plays Ben Mertens.
Jiang Jun, who stunned O’Sullivan, goes up against Zak Surety, while Scott Donaldson’s reward for beating Zhao is a showdown with Pang Junxu.
Play gets under way at 2.30am BST on Tuesday, with all matches contested over the best of nine frames at Bao’an Sports Centre in Shenzhen.
