Wu Yize renews his rivalry with Shaun Murphy on Friday with a place in the Shenzhen Open semi-finals at stake.
It is another repeat of this year’s World Championship final at Bao’an Sports Centre, where Judd Trump is waiting for the winner in the last four.
Wu holds fond memories of his dramatic 18-17 victory over Murphy at the Crucible, while he also prevailed on the final black when they met at this stage of the Shanghai Masters.
In fact, three of the four meetings between the players have gone down to the wire, with the Chinese having won all three of their showdowns in 2026.
Wu is appearing in his first ranking quarter-final of the season, following a pair of 5-3 victories over Xu Si and Ricky Walden.
It has been a solid turnaround from the world number four, who was in danger of an early exit at 4-3 down against Jamie Clarke, who he eventually beat 5-4 in their heldover third-round tie.
However, the form book certainly favours Murphy heading into the latest instalment of this fixture.
The Magician, who was the beaten finalist in last year’s Xi’an Grand Prix, is appearing in his fourth quarter-final from six events this season.
Murphy got to the semi-finals at the English Open last time out, but was on the wrong end of an inspired comeback by Mark Williams, who recovered from 5-1 down to prevail 6-5.
The four-time major winner has shown no signs of clincher’s disease this week, though, hitting four centuries and recording a trio of 5-1 victories over Marco Fu, Hossein Vafaei and Elliot Slessor.
Following his 5-0 whitewash of Mark Selby earlier in the day, former world number one Trump stands in the way of a place in the final for whoever prevails from this clash.
The match breaks off at 12.30pm (7.30pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Bao’an Sports Centre.
