Alfie Burden seals astonishing Snooker Shoot Out triumph
Alfie Burden won the first ranking title of his career after beating Stuart Bingham to seal a remarkable victory at the Snooker Shoot Out.
The Londoner, who turned professional in 1994, fell off the professional tour at the end of last season, and was initially the 20th reverse to participate at the Blackpool Tower this week.
Indeed, Burden only entered as a late call-up on Wednesday morning, having accepted the invitation via a phone call at his local swimming pool.
The World Seniors champion fully capitalised on his unexpected opportunity, landing the top prize of £50,000 and securing a place in next season’s Champion of Champions.
“I think I’ll swerve the swimming from now on!” he told TNT Sports.
“I’ve had a 30-year career and it’s been mostly downs. I’ve underperformed and that’s mainly down to me. But tonight is a night for me.
“This is a special moment for me, and I’m going to cherish it.”

Burden had trailed 46-0 against David Lilley in the opening round, but recovered to prevail a narrow 49-46 winner
After beating Ishpreet Singh Chadha on Friday, he then defeated Gary Wilson, Liam Highfield, Zach Richardson and Noppon Saenkgham – hitting breaks of 85 and 73 along the way – to reach his first career ranking final.
Standing in his way was former Crucible king Bingham. Runner-up to Dominic Dale in 2014, Ballrun had dethroned reigning Shoot Out champion Tom Ford, while also beating Sanderson Lam, Jackson Page and Iulian Boiko to reach his first ranking showpiece in six years.
Faced with a tricky opening red while going straight into the pack, Burden’s positive approach paid dividends as a break of 56 eventually proved enough to secure an emotional victory, which he celebrated by jumping onto the table while sharing embraces with great friends Jimmy White and Neal Foulds.
“I think it’s written in the stars after Alfie got a phone call in his Speedos!” Bingham joked.
“Well done to him. He fully deserved it. From the second or third round, he looked really cool and calm.
“This venue is made for the Shoot Out. It’s a great atmosphere. It’s been a great couple of days.”
