Ronnie O’Sullivan v Ali Carter live stream | Tour Championship 2024 preview
Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ali Carter review their bitter rivalry in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Tour Championship in Manchester on Wednesday.
It is the first meeting between the pair since their public spat following The Masters in January, when Carter accused O’Sullivan of “snotting all over the floor” and was unhappy with the behaviour of a section of O’Sullivan’s supporters at Alexandra Palace.
O’Sullivan did not hold back in his post-match press conference, letting fly with an astonishing rant over Carter’s conduct, which included multiple expletives.
It is not the first run-in between the two Essex cueists, with O’Sullivan having famously dubbed Carter “Mr Angry” during their fiery exchange at the 2018 World Championship.
O’Sullivan prevailed 10-7 in the final to secure a record-extending eighth Masters title and set up the prospect of a first seasonal Triple Crown, having also triumphed at the UK Championship in December.
The Rocket will head to The Crucible in little over a fortnight’s time on a quest for an outright record eighth world title, arguably the final piece of the jigsaw in an extraordinary career.
The world number one has also picked up the World Grand Prix, Shanghai Masters and Saudi World Masters titles this season, taking his career ranking title tally to 41 and arrives in Manchester bidding to claim a second Tour Championship crown to follow his initial triumph in 2019.
His most recent tournament appearance resulted in a 5-4 defeat to Hossein Vafaei at the World Open in Yushan a fortnight ago, while Carter comes into this huge clash on the back of a battling win less than 24 hours ago.
Carter stormed into a 7-1 lead over Barry Hawkins at the close of the first session and withstood a valiant late fightback from ‘The Hawk’ to seal a 10-8 victory.
As well as The Masters, ‘The Captain’ has also finished runner-up at the Wuhan Open this season and was a semi-finalist at the Players Championship in February.
His only previous appearance in this event came 12 months ago when he was soundly beaten 10-4 by Kyren Wilson in the quarter-finals.
The 44-year-old will be fired up to gain revenge on his rival and secure a first head-to-head win since the 2018 World Championship.
O’Sullivan has dominated this fixture over the past 23 years, incredibly winning 19 of their 20 meetings in total, including two World Championship finals (2008 and 2012).
The match gets under way from 1pm BST for the opening eight frames, before resuming to a finish from 7pm.
Either Gary Wilson or Zhang Anda will await the winner in the Semi-Finals at Manchester Central on Friday.
