Shaun Murphy locks horns with good friend Mark Selby on Saturday for the right to play Judd Trump in this year’s UK Championship final.
Two Triple Crown winners look to join another in Sunday’s showpiece at the York Barbican Centre, where world number one Trump beat Neil Robertson 6-3 earlier on Saturday.
Like the opening semi-final, this is another repeat of a previous UK Championship final, with Selby having prevailed 10-6 in 2012 to win his first title.
The Jester was also a 6-2 winner when they met at this stage on the way to landing his second UK crown in 2016.
Since then, though, Murphy has prevailed in four of their subsequent five semi-final meetings. That including a 6-1 rout in their most recent at the British Open, where he ended his wait of over two years for ranking silverware.
A UK champion in 2008 – and also a beaten finalist in 2017 – Murphy has progressed to his seventh semi-final at the season’s opening Triple Crown.
After opening with a 6-2 victory over Lyu Haotian, the Magician recovered from 4-1 down to edge out John Higgins 6-5 on the final blue, while he was also a 6-3 winner against Zhang Anda.
Selby’s route to a sixth UK Championship semi-final has been far more straightforward, with the Jester enjoying a trio of 6-2 wins over Lei Peifan, Zhou Yuelong and Barry Hawkins.
The two-time champion is now two wins away from completing a hat-trick of UK titles, and moving level with Robertson, Higgins and Ding Junhui.
One of the season’s most consistent players, Selby remains on course to win successive tournaments, following his triumph at the Champion of Champions last time out.
Although, he faces a difficult obstacle in another of this season’s winners on UK soil in Murphy, with both players aiming to secure their fourth appearances in the UK Championship final.
The match breaks off at 7pm GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the York Barbican Centre.
