Multiple UK Championship winners Judd Trump and Ding Junhui collide in a blockbuster quarter-final in York on Friday.

Defending champion Trump takes on three-time winner Ding in a clash rich with narrative, history, and contrasting form. Two of the sport’s most gifted cueists, both former world number ones and serial ranking-event winners, meet once again at The Barbican.

Trump arrived in York as the tournament favourite and the man most expect to go deep in the event. His performances so far have been controlled and professional: a 6–4 win over Stephen Maguire followed by a 6–3 victory over Si Jiahui. While not yet hitting top gear, Trump has shown enough fluency in the balls and discipline in the tactical exchanges to justify his status as the man to beat.

Ding, meanwhile, has carved his own intriguing route to the quarter-finals. A 6-4 win over Xu Si showcased flashes of his trademark fluency, and his dramatic 6–5 victory over Scott Donaldson in the previous round illustrated both resilience and sharpness in the balls. Importantly, he has already compiled several century breaks this week, evidence that his scoring game is very much alive. That will be essential against Trump, who is among the game’s most devastating break-builders when given even half a chance.

Historically, Trump holds the edge. Their head-to-head record favours the Bristolian, including a 6-3 win in their most recent meeting. His all-out attacking style, heavy scoring, and ability to seize momentum make him dangerous from the first frame. If he finds rhythm early and starts stringing together big breaks, Ding may struggle to keep pace.

Yet Ding has always been one of the few players capable of outscoring Trump when in full flow. His cue action remains one of the smoothest in the sport, and when his confidence is high, he has the ability to take frames away from opponents with elegant inevitability. Key for Ding will be the tactical side of the contest: slowing Trump down, engaging him in longer exchanges, and disrupting the free-flowing rhythm that the defending champion thrives upon.

The match gets under way from 1pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames.

Either three-time UK Champion Neil Robertson or China’s Pang Junxu will await the winner in Saturday’s semi-finals.
