Ronnie O’Sullivan launches his quest for a sixth title of the season when he faces Michael White in the World Open first round on Tuesday.

Despite only playing a handful of events, the Rocket has been the most successful player on the tour this term.

Having already landed the Shanghai Masters, UK Championship, Masters and World Grand Prix, he arrives in Yushan fresh from winning the inaugural World Masters of Snooker in Saudi Arabia.

The world number one’s association with the World Grand Prix will always be highlighted by the memorable 147 he compiled against Mark King in 2010, initially refusing to pot the final black due to the significantly reduced prize money only to be persuaded by referee Jan Verhaas.

O’Sullivan, who was runner-up to Neil Robertson that year, also made a maximum during the ‘Grand Prix’ era, doing so against Graeme Dott in 1999. He also won the tournament in 2004, while reaching a further three finals.

The seven-time World champion now looks to maintain his perfect record against White, who he has beaten in each of their six previous meetings, with the Welshman only winning two or more frames in two of those encounters.

World number 62 White, who returned to the tour in 2022, is hoping to make a strong end to the season, in which a run to the last 16 of the Shoot Out represents his best performance.

The Welshman heads to China having suffered first-round exits in three of his last six tournaments.

The winner of this match will take on Lyu Haotian, who was a 5-4 winner over Aaron Hill earlier today, in the last 32 of the World Open.

Play gets under way at 11.30am GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at the Yushan Sports Centre.
