Ding is eyeing his seventh Crucible quarter-final (Zhai Zheng/Xinhua/Alamy Live News)

Ding Junhui looks to maintain his dominant record over Luca Brecel when they meet in a mouth-watering World Championship second-round clash.

One of the standout ties of the round puts the players ranked seventh and 10th in the world respectively at The Crucible.

It is a fixture that has been very much to Ding’s liking, with the Chinese winning eight of their nine previous encounters.

Although, Brecel did win their most recent at this season’s Scottish Open, while five of their last six meetings have come down to a deciding frame.

Ding remains the only player from Asia to reach the final of snooker’s blue-riband event, as well as a further two semi-finals, though he arrived this year seeking a first match win since 2020.

Nevertheless, he finally put an end to a run of four successive first-round exits by battling past free-scoring debutant Zak Surety, thanks to a 10-7 victory.

The Dragon now looks to reach his seventh Crucible quarter-final, and first since 2018.

Meanwhile, by winning his first-round match, this is already a good omen for Brecel, who lifted the trophy the only year he previously progressed beyond the opening round in 2023.

The Belgian appeared on course for another early exit at 5-1 down against Ryan Day in round one.

However, the four-time ranking event winner, who famously overturned a 14-5 deficit against Si Jiahui in the semi-finals two years ago, produced another wonderful turnaround to prevail 10-7.

Having not played since reaching the Welsh Open semi-finals in mid-February, Brecel certainly has plenty in the tank heading into this battle of two of game’s most decorated overseas players.

A former World champion – 2019 winner Judd Trump or 2005 victor Shaun Murphy – awaits whoever prevails from this encounter in the quarter-finals.

The match breaks off at 7pm BST on Saturday with the opening eight frames, while continuing with another eight at 2.30pm BST on Sunday, before playing to a conclusion at 7pm BST on Monday at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
