Si reaches Wuhan Open final after wonderful 147 against Trump

Judd Trump goes toe to tie with Si Jiahui in a mouth-watering semi-final showdown at the Wuhan Open on Friday.

The world number one and reigning champion continues his title defence against the highest-ranked Chinese player still standing at the China Optics Valley Convention & Exhibition Center (COVCEC).

The history of this fixture certainly favours Trump, who has prevailed in all six previous encounters between the players.

That includes a 10-5 victory in last season’s German Masters showpiece, while he has gone on to reach the final following a win over Si on three other occasions.

Trump is a heavy favourite to do so for a fourth time, though he was given a scare in the quarter-finals by Chris Wakelin, who led 2-0 and 4-3 before missing a brown in the decider.

The Ace eventually prevailed on the pink for his 14th successive victory over the former Shoot Out champion, and 12th straight win in this event.

He now targets his fourth final of the season, in which he has already captured the Shanghai Masters and inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters crowns, and 47th in a ranking event.

Meanwhile, this is only his opponent’s fourth ranking semi-final appearance, a career tally he has doubled after a decent start to the season.

Also a semi-finalist in Riyadh, where he beat Ronnie O’Sullivan before succumbing to Mark Williams, Si is certainly going in the right direction as he looks to consolidate his place in the world’s top 16.

The 22-year-old hit three centuries in his 5-2 win over Duane Jones in the last 16, and then demonstrated great levels of maturity as he battled past compatriot Zhang Anda 5-3 in the quarter-finals.

It promises to be an intriguing battle between the world’s best player and one of snooker’s brightest young talents, with Xiao Guodong or Long Zehuang awaiting the winner in Saturday’s final.

The match gets under way at 12.30pm BST (7.30pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the COVCEC.
