Ding Junhui aims to delight his home crowd when he plays Shaun Murphy in the Xi’an Grand Prix quarter-finals on Saturday.

The Dragon is the last Chinese player standing at Qujiang Sports Complex, following Lyu Haotian’s exit at the hands of Mark Williams earlier in the day.

Ding has hit five centuries so far this week, which he opened with a pair of 5-1 victories over Sam Craigie and Jordan Brown, hitting breaks of 120, 97 and 85 against the latter.

The three-time UK champion has also put Louis Heathcote to the sword 5-3, making breaks of 115 and 100 on route, before contributions of 134, 121, 83, 77 and 63 helped him to another commanding 5-1 win against Oliver Lines.

However, his quest to reach a 39th career ranking semi-final will definitely be a tough ask against a player absolutely brimming with confidence in Murphy.

The recently crowned British Open champion has built on that momentum this week, hitting breaks of 123 and 98 as he whitewashed Long Zehuang, before contributions of 140, 138, 94 and 78 helped him edge out another home favourite in Wu Yize 5-4.

Yet, the Magician saved his best for the last 16 as he demolished reigning champion Kyren Wilson, hitting breaks of 141, 133, 84, 84, 74 to score 533 unanswered points.

Now seeking a 55th ranking semi-final appearance, Murphy prevailed in his most recent meeting with Ding at the World Open earlier this year, though the last four encounters between the players have been shared.

Whoever prevails from their latest mouth-watering clash will face either seven-time World champion Ronnie O’Sullivan or two-time Scottish Open winner Gary Wilson in the semi-finals.

The match breaks off at 12.30pm BST on Saturday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Qujiang Sports Complex in Xi’an.
