Ronnie O’Sullivan looks to maintain his dominant record over Gary Wilson when they collide in the Xi’an Grand Prix quarter-finals.
The players are set for their seventh meeting in professional competition on Saturday, with the Rocket having prevailed in five of the previous six.
Although, a potential good omen for Wilson is that he went on to win the tournament following his sole previous victory over O’Sullivan at the 2022 Scottish Open.
Both players are striking the ball very well this week, having already compiled a combined 14 centuries across eight matches.
O’Sullivan has made six of them, including breaks of 135 and 100 in his 5-2 victory over former Crucible finalist Jak Jones in the last 16.
The seven-time World champion has also beaten Iulian Boiko, Yao Pengcheng and Stephen Maguire this week for the loss of just a single frame, building on the momentum of his run to the Saudi Arabia Masters final last time out.
O’Sullivan is now gearing up for the 149th ranking quarter-final of his illustrious career, and targeting a 96th semi-final appearance.
That is exactly eight times the total Wilson will reach should he prevail from his 21st quarter-final.
The two-time Scottish Open champion has made two centuries in each of his four matches, taking his tally for the campaign to 22 and one shy of his total from the entire 2024-25 season.
Like O’Sullivan, Wilson has also recorded two whitewashes this week, against Zhang Xiao and He Guoqiang.
They have sandwiched a 5-1 rout of Sunny Akani, and narrow 5-4 victory over new professional Mateusz Baranowski, and the Tyneside Terror will want to remain on course to go one better than his run to the Wuhan Open final in August.
A showdown with either home favourite Ding Junhui or the in-form Shaun Murphy awaits the winner of this clash in the semi-finals.
The match breaks off at 12.30pm BST on Saturday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Qujiang Sports Complex in Xi’an.
