Ronnie O’Sullivan resumes his quest for inaugural Xi’an Grand Prix glory with a Last 32 clash against Yuan Sijun on Wednesday.

O’Sullivan is in pursuit of a record-extending 42nd career ranking title and a first in China since the 2017 Shanghai Masters.

The seven-time World Champion saw his 21-match unbeaten run in Shanghai brought to an end by Judd Trump in the semi-finals last month, but he has started strongly in Xi’an, dropping just two frames in as many matches so far.

The 48-year-old began by whitewashing Wang Yuchen 5-0 in his held over qualifying round match, before overcoming 17-year-old Hungarian Bulcsú Révész 5-2 in the Last 64.

O’Sullivan will be braced for a much sterner test against former ranking event semi-finalist Sijun, but is out to maintain his unbeaten head-to-head record with four wins from as many meetings.

The Rocket most recently thrashed Sijun 5-1 in last year’s Wuhan Open, in addition to a further three routine victories in 2019.

Sijun, 24, reached the semis of the 2019 Gibraltar Open and has reached a further five ranking quarter-finals, including last season’s Northern Ireland Open.

The world number 41 thrashed Bai Yulu 5-1 in the qualifying round in Leicester last month before pulling off a superb 5-2 scalp of former World Champion Neil Robertson on Tuesday.

The match gets under way at 12.30pm BST (7.30pm local time) and will be contested over the best of nine frames at the Qujiang Sports Centre.

Either 2006 World Champion Graeme Dott or former Shoot Out winner Hossein Vafaei will await the winner in the Last 32 on Thursday.
