Kyren Wilson claimed the inaugural Xi’an Grand Prix crown following a 10-8 victory over Judd Trump in the final on Sunday.

The Warrior captured his first ranking title since becoming World champion for the first time in May, winning each of the last three frames to land the top prize of ยฃ177,000 at Qujiang E-sports Centre.

It was Wilson’s seventh ranking silverware of his career, while he also ended Trump’s 10-match winning streak at the start of the new season.

The Ace, who became the new world number one earlier this week, missed out on the chance to clinch successive triumphs following his victory at the Shanghai Masters.

“I tried to stay as resilient as possible,” Wilson told WST. “Neither of us played our best, but it was great to be a part of the final in front of a packed house.

“Having lost 6-0 to Zhou Yuelong in Shanghai, I am so glad to have come here and proved why I am World Champion. I just kept pushing and trying to get over the line first.

“I know I need to start challenging and lifting more of these trophies, because Judd is a long way ahead of me in terms of ranking titles. When I get the chance to beat him in a final, I have to make it count.

“Since the World Championship, I have been trying to search for that high. I’ve gone a bit off the rails because I was searching for the wrong high.

“Now, I am more focussed on the big tournaments because there is so much on offer. I had dreamed of being World champion since I was six. I have reached the pinnacle, but I’m still young and I have a lot more to give.”

The players exchanged a century apiece as the opening eight frames were shared, with Trump’s 114 cancelled out by a 135 from Wilson.

Trump looked on course to take a 5-4 lead into the evening session, but rattled a thin blue in the jaws of the top-left corner when trailing 41-39, with Wilson subsequently snatching the frame on the pink.

Nevertheless, the Ace responded well upon the resumption, hitting breaks of 53 and 66 as he won three of the next four frames for a 7-6 advantage.

A 104 then put the new world number one back in front at 8-7, and within two more frames of securing his second title in as many tournaments this season.

However, Wilson replied with 54 for 8-8, and then won the tactical battle on the yellow in the next frame to move 9-8 in front.

The Warrior was in first with 22 in the decisive frame and, following Trump’s loose safety, a further contribution of 89 was more than enough to get him over the line.

“I made too many mistakes,” Trump said. “I had a chance at 8-8.

“I didn’t play well in the whole tournament. I was happy to make a fight of it today, but I lost all the close frames.”
