Hendry was beaten by 17-year-old Gao Yang in Cannock on Wednesday

Stephen Hendry bowed out of the German Masters following defeat by Chinese teenager Gao Yang in the opening qualifying round on Wednesday.

The seven-time World champion went down 5-2 against the 17-year-old at the Chase Centre in Cannock.

This was Hendry’s eighth match since coming out of retirement at the start of last season, and first in this event since a 5-1 defeat by James Wattana in the 2012 qualifying round.

Playing an opponent 35 years his junior, the Scotsman drew first blood with a run of 51, but was outscored 161-0 in the next two frames as Gao turned the contest around.

Hendry replied to level at the interval, but it was one-way traffic upon the resumption of play.

Indeed, the world number 78 hit a top break of 86 as he controlled the following three frames to book a second-round date with compatriot Xiao Guodong, who was a 5-1 winner against Duane Jones.

Two-time reigning champion Judd Trump began his quest to complete a hat-trick with a commanding 5-1 success over Tian Pengfei.

The Ace hit breaks of 100, 85 and 63 as he claimed his 15th successive win in this event.

Meanwhile, contributions of 128, 103 and 91 saw two-time winner Mark Williams overcome Chang Bingyu by the same scoreline and book his place at the Tempodrom, as twice semi-finalist Barry Hawkins recovered from 2-0 down to beat Matthew Selt 5-3.

Despite two centuries, 2019 champion Kyren Wilson needed a deciding frame to scrape past Li Hang in a high-scoring encounter that also produced seven breaks over 50.

Earlier in the day, Craig Steadman survived a scare as he recovered from 4-2 down to deny three-time Ladies World champion Ng On Yee victory on her professional debut.

However, former Players Championship Grand Final winner Joe Perry was ousted 5-3 by world number 96 Zhang Jiankang.
