Jimmy White commences his latest quest for a Crucible return with a clash against Liu Hongyu in the second round of the World Championship qualifiers in Sheffield.

At 61, White is the oldest player in the field for this year’s World Championship and is bidding to roll back the years in a bid to reach the main stages for the first time since 2006.

A six-time World Championship runner-up, White most recently reached the final qualifying round back in 2013, but has shown glimpses of his vintage brilliance in the subsequent years.

The Whirlwind has enjoyed success at The Crucible in the World Seniors Championship, notably claiming a fourth title last year and has finished runner-up in two recent televised Seniors 900 events.

On the main tour this season, White’s best run came at the Scottish Open last December when he reached the Last 32 with wins over Duane Jones and Jimmy Robertson.

However, he has not managed a win in a ranking event since and was recently whitewashed 5-0 by Kyren Wilson in the Last 128 of the World Open.

White finds himself in the second qualifying round at the English Institute of Sport after receiving a bye following the late withdrawal of Martin Gould.

His first test comes against a player 42 years his junior – 19-year-old Chinese talent Liu Hongyu.

The current world number 80 secured his place on tour by winning the 2023 Asia-Pacific Championship and underlined his credentials by reaching the semi-finals of this season’s English Open with wins over Shaun Murphy, Mark Williams and Ding Junhui along the way.

The teenager recorded a second win over Murphy at the Scottish Open and qualified for the German Masters by whitewashing Dominic Dale in the qualifiers.

The match gets under way from 2.30pm BST on Wednesday April 10 for a maximum of nine frames, before resuming to a finish over the best of 19 from 2.30pm on Thursday April 11.

Six-time ranking event finalist Jack Lisowski awaits the winner in the third qualifying round.
