Judd Trump looks to maintain his strong start to this year’s English Open, when he plays Anthony McGill in the last 16 on Thursday.
We have reached the midway point at Brentwood Centre, where eight of the world’s top 16 are still standing and aiming to book places in the quarter-finals.
Trump has been one of the most dominant performers of the week thus far, dropping just a single frame in his two matches.
After whitewashing former Welsh Open champion Jordan Brown 4-0, the Ace recovered from losing the opener to put Ashley Carty to the sword 4-1.
Trump, who recently relinquished top spot in the WST rankings, is just four more wins away from completing a hat-trick of English Open titles, having also lifted the Steve Davis trophy in 2020 and 2023.
He boasts a strong record against two-time ranking event winner McGill, beating him in 11 of their 13 previous meetings.
The Scotsman, who was a semi-finalist at this event in 2017, defeated Stuart Bingham and Fan Zhengyi in the previous rounds, and now targets his first ranking quarter-final of 2026.
Meanwhile, Liam Davies is looking to reach the first ranking quarter-final of his career. The young Welshman, who has enjoyed a promising start to the campaign, is bidding to claim the scalp of reigning World champion Wu Yize.
The same can be said for Gong Chenzhi, in his third season as a professional, as he locks horns with two-time Crucible finalist Ali Carter, who has only dropped one frame this week.
Two-time champion Mark Selby looks to continue his strong recent form. He plays 2017 finalist Kyren Wilson in the pick of Thursday’s matches, with the Jester having prevailed in all eight previous meetings (excluding the Championship League).
There is also a tasty battle of the left-handers, as three-time World champion Mark Williams and Barry Hawkins go head to head.
Shaun Murphy takes on Pang Junxu with the Magician looking to reach the English Open quarter-finals for the first time, while Ding Junhui and 2025 runner-up Zhou Yuelong play Joe O’Connor and Yuan Sijun respectively.
Play gets under way at 1pm BST on Thursday with all matches contested over the best of seven frames at Brentwood Centre.
