Ali Carter and Robert Milkins go head to head in the first of the German Masters semi-finals at the Tempodrom in Berlin on Saturday.

The players ranked 23rd and 31st in the world respectively collide for the right to face either Jack Lisowski or Tom Ford in Sunday’s showpiece.

Momentum will certainly be with Milkins, who has been the man of the moment in the German capital this week.

The reigning Gibraltar Open champion arrived here having never previously progressed beyond the last 16, while he was also yet to surpass that stage in any ranking tournament this season.

However, he produced a sublime break of 146 in his last-32 victory over Dominic Dale at the start of the week, before going one better with a magical maximum on the way to a 5-2 win over Shoot Out champion Chris Wakelin in the quarter-finals.

Indeed, it has been a timely upturn in fortunes for the Milkman, although you must go back to a 5-1 success at the 2009 Grand Prix for his last victory over Carter (excluding the 2013 Shoot Out).

A champion here in 2013, Carter is back at the Tempodrom this week for the first time since reaching his second final in 2017, when he was runner-up to Anthony Hamilton.

The Captain, who reached the European Masters semi-finals earlier this season, has also been in fine scoring form, hitting four centuries across his two matches thus far.

After receiving a walkover into the last 16 due to Li Hang’s suspension, Carter made breaks of 130 and 121 as he swept Louis Heathcote aside 5-1, before contributions of 122 and 111 helped him overcome Pang Junxu 5-3 in the quarter-finals.

The two-time Crucible runner-up is set to appear in his 25th ranking semi-final, and will hope to subsequently secure his passage into a 10th such final.

Play gets underway at 1pm GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Tempodrom in Berlin.
