Mark Selby renews his rivalry with Ronnie O’Sullivan in a blockbuster quarter-final clash at the Wuhan Open on Thursday.
The decorated duo have contested the biggest matches in snooker, including all three Triple Crown finals.
Coincidentally, their very first meeting came in a quarter-final in this part of the world, with Selby prevailing 5-3 at the 2002 China Open.
The Jester was also victorious in their most recent showdown at a ranking event, whitewashing the Rocket 6-0 in the last eight of the 2024 Players Championship.
However, this is their first showdown since then (excluding the Championship League), with both players looking in fine fettle this week.
Selby, fresh from his record-breaking fourth China Open triumph, has built on that momentum by beating a trio of Chinese opponents to extend his winning streak to eight matches.
He opened with a pair of 5-2 victories over Fan Zhengyi and He Guoqiang, but was pegged back to a decider from 4-1 up against Pang Junxu in the last 16.
Nevertheless, the four-time World champion held his nerve in the decider, with a run of 63 securing his place in a maiden Wuhan Open quarter-final.
O’Sullivan, meanwhile, has matched his best performance in Wuhan, where he is appearing for the first time since the inaugural event three years ago.
Following early exits at the Shanghai Masters and China Open, the Rocket has only dropped five frames during his three wins this week.
The Rocket started with a 5-2 win over Ashley Carty, before sweeping Yao Pengcheng aside 5-1. He then overcame Stephen Maguire 5-2 to progress to only his second ranking quarter-final of 2026, with his other appearance culminating in him being runner-up to Thepchaiya Un-Nooh at March’s World Open showpiece.
Neutrals will hope we are set for another mouth-watering meeting between these two, with a semi-final showdown against either world number one Judd Trump or home favourite Chang Bingyu on offer to the winner.
The match breaks off at 7am BST (2pm local time) on Thursday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Optics Valley Gymnasium.
