O’Sullivan and Higgins go head-to-head

Two all-time greats collide in a blockbuster second round clash at the World Snooker Championship as Ronnie O’Sullivan faces John Higgins.

With a staggering 74 ranking titles between them, including 11 World Championships, the two members of the ‘Class of 92′ go head-to-head at The Crucible for the seventh time.

Thirty years on from their first meeting in the sport’s showpiece event and with both now flourishing into their 50s, O’Sullivan and Higgins vie for a place in the quarter-finals once again.

O’Sullivan is making only his second appearance in a ranking event on UK soil this season, the other being a first round exit at the UK Championship in York last December.

The Rocket, who is an ever-present at The Crucible since 1993, is making his 34th consecutive appearance and equalled Stephen Hendry’s record tally of seven world titles in 2022.

Since then, he suffered back-to-back quarter-final exits, before reaching the semi-finals last year – where he was dismantled 17-7 by eventual champion Zhao Xintong.

The 50-year-old has largely centred his ranking event appearances around events in Asia and Saudi Arabia this season, notably finishing runner-up in both the Saudi Arabia Masters and World Open.

He returned as the number 12 seed and dismantled debutant He Guoqiang 10-2 in the opening round with the aid of three trademark century breaks.

Higgins, meanwhile, came through the stand-out tie of the opening round to defeat two-time world finalist Ali Carter 10-7.

Winner here in 1998, 2007, 2009 and 2011, the veteran Scot is bidding to end a 15-year wait for a fabulous fifth world title.

Higgins has finished runner-up in both the International Championship and Players Championship this season, as well as at The Masters in January.

The 50-year-old was runner-up in three consecutive World Championships between 2017 and 2019 and is looking to reach the quarter-final stage for the fifth year in a row.

However, he has lost his last three consecutive meetings with O’Sullivan – who holds a marginal overall head-to-head record of 38 wins to Higgins’ 33 dating back to 1994.

Of their six encounters at The Crucible, the duo have shared three wins apiece, with O’Sullivan prevailing 17-11 in the most recent of which in the semi-finals in 2022.

The match gets under way from 7pm on Saturday April 25 for a maximum of eight frames, before resuming from 7pm on Sunday and being played to a finish over the best of 25 from 1pm on Monday.
